Sparkling, Fizzing, Bubbling !
The thing with champagne is its uniqueness ; the thing with champagne business is that it works according to a rarity management pattern. The enlargement of the production zone comprised in the AOC will not make a big difference. But competition could. In British supermarkets, sales of prosecco have boomed 56 % in 2007. Alright, where did they start from and was it a boom in volume or value ? Even if they started low and the average price per bottle of prosecco can't compare to champagne, no one can deny that sparkling wines, in general, are eating into the champagne market-share. Should the economy keep going the same morose way, consumers wishing to retain some sparkle in their lives will eventually look elsewhere for affordable bubbles... Should champagne be worried ?
