South West: Appellation Tursan celebrates 50 year jubilee
(Nov 12, 2008)
In South West France, the co-op Vignerons Landais, formerly known as ‘cave des vins de Tursan’, and the AOVDQS Tursan celebrate their 50th year of existence. The Vignerons Landais account for more then 90% of the wine production within the appellation. They describe the 2008 vintage “as an extensive work, but the quality is good, thanks to a mild and sunny autumn”. To celebrate the first harvest in 1957, which was the first vintage of the Vins de Tursan as AO VDQS, released on the market in 1958, the Vignerons Landais launch a cuvée especially for the 50 years anniversairy: Expression, available in dry white and red.
The Vignerons Landais achieves an annual production of 1,3 million bottles in VDQS and 800 000 in Vin de Pays. The production is divided into 40% red, 15% white and a growing 40% of rosé, whose sales have bordered to 20% between 2003 and 2006 with 500 000 bottles sold in mass distribution, as stated in the French magazine RVI in 2006.
Already certified under Agriconfiane in 2003, the vintners of Landais schedule the certification of ISO 9001 and ISO 22000 for the year 2010 and are commited towards retraceability of their products. In addition the company has joined a pioneer working group in Aquitaine, composed of ten cooperative wine producers that have united under the sustainable development theme: ‘Générations 3D’.
The Vignerons Landais is currently working on the implementation of an investment plan for technical and commercial services to improve the nature of the company. Primary focus lies on the modernisation of the bottling procedure, increase of the storage capacity, renovation of the building for a better integration into the landscape and the development of the wine tourism potential. These efforts show the accession of Appellation Tursan among the ranks of AOCs.
